Halcyone and Ceyx

In Greek Mythology there is a legend of a woman named Halcyone and her husband Ceyx. Ceyx was the king of Thessaly and reigned in peace without violence or wrong. Shortly after their wedding, Ceyx had to make a long journey across the sea to visit an oracle. A great storm arose during the voyage - Ceyx drowned! Every day that Ceyx was gone, Halcyone walked the shores of the beaches and longed for her husband. After several months Ceyx’s body washed ashore.

Halcyone was so filled with grief that she threw herself into the ocean. The gods were moved by her love and grief. Halcyone and Ceyx were immediately transformed into kingfishers – Halcyon Birds. They rose from the ocean and flew off happily into the blue skies. It was declared, from that day forward, the seas would be calm and the sun would shine for seven days before and seven days after the shortest day of the year. This period is known as the Halcyon Days and is regarded as days of peace and happiness.

The kingfisher is a long-time symbol of peace and prosperity. It has many legends and superstitions about it, and most originate in ancient Greece from the story of Halcyone and Ceyx.

The Halcyon Birds – the kingfishers – in America are a beautiful bird with dull blue-gray feathering, and a white underside with a dark crest. The dark crest reflects abundance also associated with royalty.

The coloring of the kingfisher is unique among most birds. A female kingfisher has more color than the male, and some attribute this to the legend of Halcyone and how her greater love touched the gods and restored the life of her husband. It can reflect that if we bring out self-sacrificing love and manifest it, it will bring new life to us and those closest to us.

A kingfisher is a bold bird that fishes for a living. It is often seen among ponds, streams and rivers. It will dive headlong into the water for small fish. Its ability to draw life out of the waters reflects the kingfisher’s ability to stimulate opportunities for prosperity.

If a kingfisher has come to you, prepare yourself to dive into something new. If a kingfisher is around, you won’t drown. In fact, you will find that as a result you will have new sunshine and prosperity unfolding within your life.

“…..and so, they say, their love remained, and they bred on a floating nest when the waves of the sea are still for fourteen days in winter. And that is why, the sea being calm in those days, the sailors call them the “Halcyon Days”…..”
